how do hard reset my LG optimus fuel since i cant get the settings screen to open

i have tried pressing and holding the down volume button and the power button together but it just keeps vibrating and flashes the red LG icon .it wont give me the recovery screen.what am i doin wrong and is there some thing else i can do?
