Mac 10.85/10.93 lost ability to connect to DNS

Until an update to 10.8.5 my internet connection was normal. I installed Maverick 10.9.3 - no joy Network preferences indicates no ISP I am able to use the TOR browser but other browsers and email clients can not connect. I would obliged for any help with.
