I cant create a new yahoo messenger account as my phone number keeps coming up as invalid number!

I downloade & installed yahoo messenger this morning but upon creating an account, my phone number keeps getting knocked off! Can someone please help me as I need this to be in touch with my girlfriend who is in Africa at the moment. I am in Fiji Islands
