why is mplayer.exe process constantly running above 50% of CPU?

I'm running Win 7 with media center, and since 2013 the response time for remote control operations etc is very slow, but killing the mplayer.exe process fixes the problm temporarily. But it restarts in a few minutes and the situation recurs.
