How can I update my iPhone 3GS to iOS 7.0

I just bought an iPhone 3GS and I have never used an IPhone before and I'm really not understanding it already! Every time I try to download something it tells me I need the iOS 7.0 update! Can someone plz tell me how I can update so I can start downloading! Thanks
