how do i get my laptop to read whats on my kindle

i transfered a pdf formatted book to my kindle but im not seeing it on my kindle although my laptop says that its there. Application not found comes up whenever i click on the kindle under the heading divices with removeable storage. it doesnt open and show whats on it.
