How do I dual boot win 8.1 with OS X on PC

My grandson wants to dual boot his pc with Win 8.1 and OS X.  What we need to know is what system changes need to be made to bios etc.

OS X I assume needs to be on its own partition or would a separate HD be better?

 

Would appreciate help with this.
