Static electricity is the bane of electronics. Even a static charge so small you can't feel it will render a micro-transistor or ciruit quite dead. Normally, your device within its case is isolated from such things, however, somehow that charge was transferred to your phone - perhaps you were touching the screen or such when the charge hit? Regardless, there is actual physical damage to the electronics of the device and it will have to be serviced/replaced.
